FRITZ!Box 6840 LTE – Service

Setting up a VPN connection to FRITZ!Box in Windows (FRITZ!VPN)

With the FRITZ!VPN software you can establish a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection over the Internet from a Windows computer to your FRITZ!Box and then access all of the network devices and services in the FRITZ!Box home network.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • Windows 8.1 / 8 / 7 (64-bit or 32-bit) is installed on the computer.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Preparations

Downloading and installing the "FRITZ!Box VPN Connection" software

  1. Call up our VPN service page in a web browser.
  2. Download the FRITZ!VPN software.

    Important:Separate versions of the FRITZ!VPN software are available for Windows 8.1 / 8 / 7 (64-bit or 32-bit).

  3. Install FRITZ!VPN on the computer that is supposed to establish a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box.

Downloading and installing "Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection"

The Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software makes it easy to quickly set up a VPN connection. It automatically generates all of the security settings and writes them to configuration files, which then must simply be imported to the two VPN remote sites.

Note:The Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software is available for computers with Windows 10 / 8 / 7 (64-bit and 32-bit).

  1. Call up our VPN service page in a web browser.
  2. Download the Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software and install it.

Setting up a MyFRITZ! account and determining the domain name

With MyFRITZ! you can even access your FRITZ!Box over the Internet at all times if its public IP address changes on a regular basis, for example after being automatically disconnected by your Internet service provider:

Note:If you already use a different dynamic DNS service, you can also use this service instead of MyFRITZ!.

  1. Set up a MyFRITZ! account in the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Determine the MyFRITZ! domain name of the FRITZ!Box.

2 Generating a file with VPN settings

  1. Start the Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software and click "New".
  2. Select the option "Configure VPN connection for one user" and click "Next".
  3. Select the option "Computer with FRITZ!VPN" and click "Next".
  4. Enter the e-mail address of the user who intends to connect to the FRITZ!Box via VPN and click "Next".
  5. Enter the MyFRITZ! domain name of the FRITZ!Box (pi80ewgfi72d2os42.myfritz.net) in the "Name" field and click "Next".
  6. Assign the computer an IP address in the network of the FRITZ!Box:

Important:If the computer with FRITZ!VPN has an IP address from the IP network of the FRITZ!Box, no VPN communication can occur! This is the case, for example, when the computer is located in a FRITZ!Box network and the IP settings of the FRITZ!Boxes were not changed (IP address 192.168.178.1 in the factory settings).

    • If you have not changed the IP settings of the FRITZ!Box (IP address 192.168.178.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0):
      • Enable the option "Apply factory settings of the FRITZ!Box for the IP network".
    • If you have changed the IP settings of the FRITZ!Box:
      1. Enable the option "Use a different IP network".
      2. Enter the IP network (xxx.xxx.xxx.0) and the subnet mask of the FRITZ!Box. Do not enter the FRITZ!Box's IP address (xxx.xxx.xxx.1).

        Example:
If the FRITZ!Box uses the IP address 192.168.10.1, enter 192.168.10.0 as the IP network and select the subnet mask "24 - 255.255.255.0".

      3. Adjust the "IP address of the user in the network of the selected FRITZ!Box" to the IP network of the FRITZ!Box.

Important:The IP address of the user may not lie in the range used by the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server (xxx.xxx.xxx.20 to xxx.xxx.xxx.200 in the factory settings).

  7. Only enable the option "Send all data over the VPN tunnel" if you want all Internet queries from the computer to be forwarded via the remote FRITZ!Box whenever a VPN connection is active.

Note:This way you can also access your e-mail in encrypted form even from public and non-secured wireless networks (hotspots), for example.

  8. Click "Next" and "Finish".

Now Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection generates the VPN settings.
A Windows folder containing the file "fritzbox_[...].cfg" and a subfolder with the file "vpnuser_[...].cfg" will now open automatically.

Note:You can open this folder at any time. To do so, mark the MyFRITZ! domain name of the FRITZ!Box in the Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software and click the "Explorer" button.

3 Importing the VPN settings to the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Permit Access" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "VPN" tab.
  4. Click the "Add VPN Connection" button.
  5. Click "Import a VPN configuration from an existing VPN settings file".
  6. Click "Choose File".
  7. Select the file "fritzbox_[...].cfg" created with the Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software and click "Open".
  8. Click "OK".

4 Importing the VPN settings to FRITZ!VPN

  1. Run the FRITZ!VPN software from the Windows start menu and click "Next" or "File" and then "Import" in the software.
  2. Select the file "vpnuser_[...].cfg".
  3. Click "Next" and "Finish".

5 Establishing a VPN connection

  1. Establish an Internet connection on the computer running FRITZ!VPN.
  2. Run the FRITZ!VPN software from the Windows start menu.
  3. Select the icon with the MyFRITZ! domain name of the FRITZ!Box.
  4. Click the "Establish" icon.
    • The VPN connection is established.

Note:Active VPN connections are displayed under "Internet > Permit Access > VPN" and "Internet > Online Monitor" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
