FRITZ!Box 7340 – Service

Integrating a FRITZ!Box into the home network via powerline

You can connect a FRITZ!Box to an existing FRITZ!Box over your home's electrical wiring, for example with FRITZ!Powerline, and configure it so that it uses the first FRITZ!Box's internet connection (operation as an IP client).

Internet and telephony services configured in the FRITZ!Box (router) with internet access are then available to the FRITZ!Box in the home network (IP client) and the devices connected to that FRITZ!Box, such as computers and telephones.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Setting up the router

In the factory settings, the FRITZ!Box automatically assigns the correct IP settings to all devices via DHCP. If you disabled the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server, reenable it:

  1. Click "Home Network" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (router).
  2. Click "Network" or "Home Network Overview" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button. If the button is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  5. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Box has the IP address (subnet mask and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

2 Setting up the IP client

  1. Either use a network cable or wireless LAN to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box (IP client). If the computer is already connected to the FRITZ!Box (router), clear this connection.

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Click "Internet" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Select "Other internet service provider" from the drop-down list "Internet service provider". With some regional settings, this entry will not be displayed until you select "More internet service providers".
  4. Enable the option "Connection to an external modem or router" in the "Connect via" or "Connection" section.
  5. Select "Share existing internet connection in the network (IP client mode)" in the "Operating Mode" section.
  6. Enter the speeds of your internet connection in the "Downstream" (receive direction) and "Upstream" (send direction) fields.

    Enter 32000 for a downstream of 32 Mbit/s; enter 2000 for an upstream of 2 Mbit/s.

  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

The FRITZ!Box is now configured for operation as an IP client.

Note:When the FRITZ!Box is configured as an IP client, it can no longer be reached at; instead, you must use the Mesh or home network overview of the FRITZ!Box (router) or use the IP address that is assigned to it.

3 Connecting the IP client

Here we show you how to connect two FRITZ!Boxes over your home's electrical wiring using FRITZ!Powerline as an example:

Note:Refer to the respective manufacturer for information on setting up other powerline adapters, for example consult the manual.

  1. Plug the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box (router).
  2. Plug the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
    • Now the powerline connection is automatically established and the "Powerline" LEDs on both adapters remain lit.

Note:Upon delivery, the adapters from a FRITZ!Powerline set use a unique network password. You do not have to configure any additional settings before using them.

  3. Use a network cable to connect the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box (router).
  4. Use a network cable to connect the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter to the "LAN 1" port on the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
    • As soon as the "LAN" LEDs on both of the FRITZ!Powerline adapters remain lit, the connection is established.

4 Setting up telephony

If you also want to use the telephone numbers configured in the FRITZ!Box (router) with telephones connected to the IP client:

5 Setting up wireless LAN

You can use the IP client as an additional wireless access point. This way your wireless devices can access the internet and other devices in the home network over the IP client, even if the wireless network of the FRITZ!Box (router) is not available.

Configure the following settings in the IP client so your wireless devices always automatically connect with the FRITZ!Box with the strongest signal (wireless roaming):

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. For the frequency band being used, enter the wireless network name of the FRITZ!Box (router) in the field "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  5. If you disabled automatic channel selection in the FRITZ!Box (router) and set a wireless channel, set the same channel in the FRITZ!Box (IP client):
    1. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
    2. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings" in the "Radio Channel Settings" section.
    3. From the drop-down list "Radio channel", select the channel used by the FRITZ!Box (router) for the wireless frequency band being used.
    4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  7. Enable the option "WPA encryption".
  8. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode". If not all of your wireless devices support WPA2 encryption, select the option "WPA + WPA2".
  9. Enter the network key of the FRITZ!Box (router) in the "Network key" field.
  10. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
