Extending the DECT range of the FRITZ!Box with a repeater

You can increase the DECT range of your FRITZ!Box (base station) if you configure additional FRITZ!Boxes to be used as repeaters.

Your telephones will then automatically register with the device with the strongest signal. If you leave the coverage area of one device while making a call, then the telephone automatically connects to the other device without interrupting the call.

Here we show you how to set up an additional FRITZ!Box as a repeater. However, instead of using a FRITZ!Box, you can also use a FRITZ!DECT Repeater or a DECT repeater from another manufacturer.

Important:The instructions for configuring the access point are valid for the FRITZ!Box model given above these instructions. You can find guides for other models in the "Service" area of the relevant FRITZ!Boxes on avm.de.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • A FRITZ!Box 7270 v3, FRITZ!Box 7390 or FRITZ!Box 7240 with the latest FRITZ!OS must be used as the repeater. Other FRITZ!Box models do not support this function.
  • It is not possible to register DECT repeaters from other manufacturers and FRITZ!Boxes in DECT repeater mode at the same time. FRITZ!DECT Repeaters and FRITZ!Boxes can be registered at the same time.
  • A maximum of six repeaters can be registered. All repeaters must be directly registered with the base station ("star topology"). A repeater cannot be registered with another repeater (cascading).
  • The "DECT Eco" function is no longer available.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS.

1 Configuring the access point

Disabling the keylock

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Buttons and LEDs" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click on the "Keylock" tab.
  4. Disable the keylock.
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Disabling "Reduce DECT field strength"

  1. Click "DECT" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Base Station" in the "DECT" menu.
  3. Disable the option "Reduce DECT field strength" in the "Radio Field Strength" section.
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Enabling encryption

DECT encryption must be enabled in order to use the convenience functions offered by your FRITZ!Fon:

  1. Click "DECT" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Base Station" in the "DECT" menu.
  3. Enable the option "Permit only secure DECT connections (recommended)" in the "Security" section.
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
  5. If the option was disabled, you must then restart the FRITZ!Box once using the user interface ("System > Backup > Restart").

Disabling DECT Eco

  1. Click "DECT" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Base Station" in the "DECT" menu.
  3. Disable the option "DECT Eco" in the "Radio Field Strength" section.
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Setting a PIN

  1. Click "DECT" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Base Station" in the "DECT" menu.
  3. Enter a four-digit PIN in the "Registration" section.
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Important:You cannot change the PIN once you have successfully registered the repeater!

2 Configuring the repeater

Enter the same PIN in the FRITZ!Box to be used as the repeater that you defined for the base station and enable the DECT repeater mode:

  1. Click "DECT" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Repeater" in the "DECT" menu.
  3. Enable the option "DECT repeater enabled".
  4. Enter the DECT base station's four-digit PIN.
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

After the setting has been applied, the "DECT" or "Info" LED on the repeater will begin to flash and the repeater is then in registration mode.

3 Establishing a DECT connection

  1. Position both FRITZ!Boxes close to each other even if you intend to place the repeater farther away later.
  2. Now push the "DECT" button on your base station. Hold down the button for at least 6 seconds until the "DECT" or "Info" LED on the base station begins to flash.

The repeater is registered with the base station when the "DECT" or "Info" LED on both devices stops flashing. It is then displayed by the DECT monitor under "DECT > DECT Monitor" in the user interface of the base station.

4 Finding the ideal location for the repeater

  • Select a location for the repeater where a telephone connected directly with the base station still has flawless reception. Depending on the setting selected in the user interface, the "DECT" LED or "Info" LED on the repeater must either remain lit or not be lit at all. If the LED flashes, then the repeater is not connected to the access point. In addition, at the location you select for the repeater, voice transmission in both directions must be absolutely interference-free, even when using each of your telephones once the repeater has been turned off. Otherwise, the location is not a suitable place to position the repeater.

Now the repeater extends the DECT range of the base station. Register new telephones with the base station. You cannot register telephones with the repeater.

Note:A FRITZ!Fon displays a small red 1 over the signal strength bars when it is logged onto the base station and a 2 when it is logged onto the repeater. If you are using several repeaters, the numbers 2 to 7 are used.
